Do you want to get beyond the point of just taking snaps and learn how to create images that have impact? Have you got thousands of photos on your computer and are wondering if there is a better way of managing them? What can you do with all those files that are ‘locked’ away in a computer? Tutor: Jo Randerson

This course encourages individuals to develop their own writing voice for performance. It will suit those wishing to create their own solo, playwrights and devisors. We will work around the specific needs of the group resent, supporting and critiquing each other, and will use practical exercises to build a vocabulary for creating theatre work. The emphasis will be on brave, original expressions by the writer/creator. CALLIGRAPHY VERSATILE TOOLS & MATERIALS
Tutor: Olive Bull

In this course we will take a close look at lettering tools and materials – some familiar and some not-so-familiar. The marks that these tools make on different surfaces can give life and emphasis to otherwise “ordinary” letterforms. This allows a calligrapher much more choice when trying to make the words reflect the meaning of the text. Students will make some of their own tools, as well as use others not normally used for lettering. Cut letters, embossing and writing on fabric will be included. Tuition will include Neuland Hand, and knowledge of Italic or Foundational Hand would be useful. A keepsake sampler book will be made as future reference. The final exercise will be for students to begin small pieces of work using their new skills and tools.

Olive’s interest in calligraphy developed  in 1982, and she began teaching in 1984. Her own studies include workshops with visiting international tutors, correspondence courses from the UK and the USA; and extended periods of time in both these places and Italy attending classes on specialist topics. She has taught extensively in Australia from Cairns to Hobart (and many places between), at McGregor Schools at the University of Southern Queensland, for Queensland Arts Council, and at the past seven “Summer Schools in Winter” events held in Melbourne. Her ‘former life’ as a high school teacher has assisted her in passing on the passion she has for her subject, and helping others develop their own skills. Major commissions include three RAAF squadron badges, work for the Queensland government, including citations presented to governors and other dignitaries. Examples of her work are held in the James Hardie Collection of Rare Books in Queensland, the National Gallery in Canberra, the New South Wales state library, and private collections.

BOOK ARTS
Tutor: Yoka Van Dyk

Class Now Full Waiting List Applies

Between Eastern scroll and Western codex – inspiration, contemplation and exhilaration. Using inspiration from ancient Japanese decorated scrolls and Western illuminated manuscripts such as the beautiful Books of Hours from the late Middle Ages we will work on several projects during this week, such as a medieval style binding, a miniature booklet and a Japanese-style Haiga (illuminated haiku poems). We will also try our hand at some eastern and western decoration techniques to bring some splendour to our own pages and contemplate personal content. This is a class for people who also want to look beyond the covers and like to plunge into an exhilarating adventure on the page……

Yoka is a printmaker, book artist and calligrapher who resides between New Zealand and The Netherlands. It is the very personal and intimate process of working with her own poetic words and images in a particular chosen book format that never ceases to captivate her. Each artist book she creates, whether an edition book or a one-off, consists of footprints left behind of an emotional or conceptual journey and these become the visual marks of her existence.Yoka holds a degree in Printmaking and Book Art from Wanganui Quay School of Art and an MA in Visual Art and Design (Hons) from Auckland University of Technology. She has taught bookbinding, book art, printmaking and design at the UCOL Art School in Wanganui and also taught numerous workshops, summer school and classes over the last 20 years throughout New Zealand. She is currently on a cultural sabbatical in The Netherlands where she is making a study of illuminated manuscripts, returning to New Zealand in time for this art school.

WOOD CARVING
Tutor: Don Powell

This course will cover all aspects of carving and Don will teach through a project from conception to completion covering design, wood selection, tool requirements, sharpening and finishing. For the main project of the week you will have a choice of a horse head, a human head or a figure. During the week there will also be a hand held carving session and for this Don will have a number of suitable projects. For illustrations of some of these see Issue No. 61 of the Australian Wood Review magazine, published in December.
There will be a charge for wood which will be provided for this course.

Don is a Maleny, Queensland, based wood sculptor who displays a deep passion for his work, classically identified by the realism and intricate detail in his carvings. He has a particular affinity for figures but works on a wide range of subjects.
In 1996 Don was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study teaching methods in Europe. He is now a highly respected teacher, author of articles on woodcarving and has been working on a very special project - St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney.
Some of Don's work displays a combination of a variety of timbers and also metal, stone and jewels for stunning effects of colour and texture. Don's philosophy is that wood fits comfortably with anything, something truly natural, being one of God's greatest gifts to mankind.
