fee $310 Have you ever made etchings and would like to broaden the range of intaglio techniques you use? Intaglio print processes such as etching, chine colle, paint-tint, spit bite, white ground, mezzotint, drypoint, electric engraving and roulette will be demonstrated to the group so that you can find processes which suit your own direction and working methods. Different forms of presentation for the intaglio print such as the edition, the artist’s book, the multiple, and the broadsheet will also be investigated. Special emphasis will be placed on each participant’s individual and personal directions so that each person will produce a series of etchings and/or an artist book showcasing their own personal flair and design. Original, historical and contemporary examples of each intaglio print process will be shown and discussed with the group.Previous experience would be useful, but beginners are also welcome .MATERIALS FEE: $175

We will also examine the ways that editing and sequencing can strengthen the impact of your narratives. We will consider how best to approach your chosen subject matter, how to maximise expressive elements of light and composition, and how to place images in a dialogue with each other for maximum impact.Participants must have a DSLR or SLR camera with fully manual capability and a sturdy tripod. If working digitally access to a laptop and photo-imaging software would be ideal. Each participant will work out the subject matter for their photo-essay with Becky at the beginning of the week.

Class Now Full Waiting List Applies This is a course for landscape photographers wanting to get the most out of digital technology. Attendees will take photographs throughout the week which will be processed and critiqued during the course. It is assumed that attendees are already familiar with their computer, their computer filing system and Photoshop. Attendees need a digital SLR for fieldwork, a tripod, a card reader, a laptop loaded with Photoshop and/or Lightroom, and a mouse – as a trackcard will not be sufficient.John will teach the course using Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe Lightroom 2. Digital techniques covered will include exposure, the histogram, adjusting with curves, black and white, RAW vs jpg, layers and layer masking, making panoramas, image sharpening and printing. Camera techniques covered will include the effect of lenses, aperture and shutter speed, filters, tripods and specialised equipment, lighting and composition.
Class Now Full Waiting List Applies Have you been using a digital camera for year and been happy just to point and shoot, but now want to explore the real capabilities of these cameras? Do you want to get beyond the point of just taking snaps and learn how to create images that have impact? Have you got thousands of photos on your computer and are wondering if there is a better way of managing them? What can you do with all those files that are ‘locked’ away in a computer? How can you enhance them? What are the printing options and what else can you do with them? It can be intimidating but this fun-filled, creative week will take the mysteries out of the digital camera and explore the creative uses of all those features plus look at the associated use of a computer to manage, enhance and use photos. It will all be explained in practical workshops and in easy to understand language – that is guaranteed. Topics will include understanding quality and resolution, shooting in low light, using flash effectively, photographing people, motion, sports, creating strong compositions, using lens(es) effectively and more. A laptop would be a big advantage for this course as would Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Photoshop.
Bee & Rata Blossom - photo by Dave Wethey Class No 109A - fee $124 This course will cover the basic tools and techniques of fly tying to enable students to tie practical patterns for both the local area and other parts of the country.
In this session which may (but not necessarily) be a follow-on from the fly tying, participants will cover the right tackle required, casting, tactics and choice of flies. Apart from a few lessons at the College, most of the time will be spent putting theory into practice in some of the finest trout fishing areas in New Zealand. A local fishing licence is a pre-requisite.

This course encourages individuals to develop their own writing voice for performance. It will suit those wishing to create their own solo, playwrights and devisors. We will work around the specific needs of the group resent, supporting and critiquing each other, and will use practical exercises to build a vocabulary for creating theatre work. The emphasis will be on brave, original expressions by the writer/creator. Please send a paragraph to a page detailing a little about yourself and what you will be interested in focussing on during the workshop (no finished plays please, but works in progress or fledgling ideas welcome).
In this course we will take a close look at lettering tools and materials – some familiar and some not-so-familiar. The marks that these tools make on different surfaces can give life and emphasis to otherwise “ordinary” letterforms. This allows a calligrapher much more choice when trying to make the words reflect the meaning of the text. Students will make some of their own tools, as well as use others not normally used for lettering. Cut letters, embossing and writing on fabric will be included. Tuition will include Neuland Hand, and knowledge of Italic or Foundational Hand would be useful. A keepsake sampler book will be made as future reference. The final exercise will be for students to begin small pieces of work using their new skills and tools. Olive’s interest in calligraphy developed in 1982, and she began teaching in 1984. Her own studies include workshops with visiting international tutors, correspondence courses from the UK and the USA; and extended periods of time in both these places and Italy attending classes on specialist topics. She has taught extensively in Australia from Cairns to Hobart (and many places between), at McGregor Schools at the University of Southern Queensland, for Queensland Arts Council, and at the past seven “Summer Schools in Winter” events held in Melbourne. Her ‘former life’ as a high school teacher has assisted her in passing on the passion she has for her subject, and helping others develop their own skills. Major commissions include three RAAF squadron badges, work for the Queensland government, including citations presented to governors and other dignitaries. Examples of her work are held in the James Hardie Collection of Rare Books in Queensland, the National Gallery in Canberra, the New South Wales state library, and private collections.
Class No 113- fee $340 Class Now Full Waiting List Applies Between Eastern scroll and Western codex – inspiration, contemplation and exhilaration. Using inspiration from ancient Japanese decorated scrolls and Western illuminated manuscripts such as the beautiful Books of Hours from the late Middle Ages we will work on several projects during this week, such as a medieval style binding, a miniature booklet and a Japanese-style Haiga (illuminated haiku poems). We will also try our hand at some eastern and western decoration techniques to bring some splendour to our own pages and contemplate personal content. This is a class for people who also want to look beyond the covers and like to plunge into an exhilarating adventure on the page……
